FROM THE COUNSELING CORNER
THESE QUESTIONS WERE DEVELOPED TO HELP PARENTS OR GUARDIANS OF STUDENTS SUCCEED IN SCHOOL!
1. I know how to contact my child’s teacher (s)? Email is the easiest way to communicate with your child’s teachers. Go to the school website and search for teacher name there. Most emails are the teachers first initial and last name @hueneme.org, or you can contact the school at 986-8750 and leave a message.
2. I know about special events at my child’s school? We have a new app that can keep you up to date with all our schools’ happenings. Go to the APP store and download the Hueneme School District app, and then go to settings and notifications to link directly to your child’s home school. Please also check the backpack for flyers, make sure your phone number is linked to our telephone messaging system and when you pass by the school, check the marquee.
3. I know how to communicate effectively with my child about the school day: All sites will be offering Triple P- Positive Parenting Classes. Check with the school for a list of scheduled classes offered through our Parent Academy and Coffee with the Principal.
4. I know how to explain things to my child about his/her homework- Tutoring in academic subjects is available after school for Math on Tuesdays (2:45-3:45) and Wednesdays (1:15-2:15) in room 29. And for all other subjects on Wednesdays (1:15-2:15) and Thursday (2:45-3:45) in room 30. The local libraries, Oxnard and Preuter also offer homework assistance. Please call them directly for schedules.
5. I know enough about the subjects of my child’s homework to help him/her? If not, go to Khan Academy. Org for specialized help. Or reviewed the districts website for additional resources under the Educational Services tab. Some teachers also offer homework assistance afterschool, contact the teacher for additional information.
6. I know how to supervise my child’s homework? Be sure to be checking the agenda on a daily basis. You can also check Parent Connect to monitor your child’s academics and attendance daily. Please come into the school office to get your password. Students can access their own information via student connect as well. There is also a tab that you can link directly to the students’ teacher for additional information.
7. I know how to help my child succeed in school- Speaking with your child’s counselor at the school is very important to getting the information that you may need. Call the school and arrange to meet with your child’s counselor at least a few times a year. Students receive report cards in October, November, January, March, May and at the end of the school year. Please come to the school to get a copy if you do not receive one.
